US South Pacific Scholarship Program
The U.S. South Pacific Scholarship Program (USSP) is funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the East-West Center.
It offers comprehensive support for pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the University of Hawai‘i. Moreover, it addresses Pacific Island countries’ development needs by fostering cross-cultural understanding, professional growth, and leadership development.
The scholarship offers:
- Full tuition coverage for undergraduate or graduate studies.
- Support for housing, meals, and other essentials.
- A robust mentoring component and the possibility of a follow-on summer internship.
- Opportunities to engage with host families and volunteer service programs to deepen your understanding of the United States.
Available fields of study include:
- STEM Fields: Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- Environmental Studies & Public Health: Addressing sustainability and health challenges in the Pacific.
- Public Administration & Political Science: Shaping effective governance and policy.
- Education & NGO Management: Enhancing education systems and community leadership.
- Other Disciplines: Communication, journalism, gender studies, and business.
Eligibility Criteria
Citizens from the following countries can apply: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
Preference is given to candidates with limited prior experience in the U.S. or other regions outside the Pacific.
Applicants with U.S. citizenship, U.S. non-citizen nationality, or permanent residency are ineligible.
Bachelor’s Scholarships:
- Completion of secondary school (Form 6, Grade 12, or equivalent).
- Partial undergraduate coursework is acceptable, provided a four-year bachelor’s degree has not been completed.
Master’s Scholarships:
- Completion of at least a three-year bachelor’s program.
- Applicants with a post-graduate diploma or honors degree are strongly encouraged to apply.
