The Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF)

The 4YF program offers recipients a minimum annual stipend of $18,200, plus full tuition coverage, for up to four years. This financial support ensures that you can focus on research and academic pursuits without the burden of financial uncertainty.

The 4YF funding is provided for a maximum of four years or until the end of the student’s fifth year in the doctoral program, whichever comes first. However, the continuation of funding is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress, making it essential for recipients to maintain a strong academic record.

Eligibility and how to become a Fellow

The 4YF program is open to both domestic and international students enrolled full-time in PhD, DMA, or MDPhD programs at UBC. Here are the ways you can become a 4YF recipient:

1. Graduate Program Selection (4YF-G) recipients from among eligible incoming and continuing students.
2. Tri-Agency Award Recipients (4YF-T) such as Vanier Scholarships, Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Awards, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships—automatically become 4YF recipients.
3. Other Major Scholarship Winners (4YF-U) like the Killam Doctoral Scholarship or the Li Tze Fong Fellowship also automatically become 4YF recipients.
4. Indigenous Graduate Fellowship Recipients (4YF-I) automatically become 4YF-I recipients. They may also receive an additional IGF top-up of $5,000 per year for the remainder of their 4YF-I funding period.
