Eligibility: US-based entities and global academic institutions

The Bezos Earth Fund is looking to support organizations by allowing them to bring speed, scale, accuracy, and precision to their climate and nature efforts by proposing, designing, and deploying modern AI solutions.

It does so with the help of a $100 million initiative created to incentivize collaboration, stimulate innovation, and nurture solutions that might not otherwise exist.

The AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge

This ambitious global program seeks innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues, with an initial focus on:

  • Sustainable Proteins: Utilizing AI to develop delicious, affordable, and environmentally-friendly protein alternatives.
  • Power Grid Optimization: Integrating renewable energy into electricity grids through AI to enhance resilience and expand energy access.
  • Biodiversity Conservation: Leveraging AI for the protection of endangered species and the restoration of wild habitats.
  • Wildcard Solutions: Innovative AI applications for climate change mitigation or nature protection that fall outside the specified focus areas.

Selection Criteria

A multidisciplinary group of experts will evaluate submissions based on the following equally weighted criteria: impact, viability, suitability, scalability, and societal benefit.

First, an expert review panel will score proposals. Those with the highest scores will advance to a multidisciplinary judging panel. Next, judges will recommend up to 30 teams to be selected as Seed Grantees. Each team will receive $50,000 and an invitation to move on to the next phase.

In Phase 2, judges will evaluate the submissions again and recommend up to 15 awardees. Each selected team will receive up to $2 million to develop and implement their solutions.

Winners will have two years to bring their solutions to life. They will test, iterate, and report on their effectiveness. Finally, awardees will convene at the AI for Climate and Nature Summit in 2025.
