Sustainable Summits Conference 2016

The organisers of the 2016 Sustainable Summits conference, John Cocks and Dave Bamford, together with NZ Alpine Club President Penny Brothers, are looking forward to welcoming overseas participants to the conference at Aoraki Mount Cook in New Zealand in August 2016.

They also look forward to having the opportunity to show you the mountains regions and the work that has been done to conserve them.

The Sustainable Summits Conference is the 3rd global conference about protecting New Zeland mountains, and focuses on three core conference themes:

Environmental Impact

Human waste, water contamination, noise from helicopters and other machines, tracks and erosion, huts, bridges and tracks – visual impacts.

Natural Hazards

Large rockfall, ice recession and unstable geology, avalanches, adverse weather conditions, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions

Social Values

Pressures on popular mountain routes, commercialism in the mountains, influences of social media, cultural awareness and visitor implications, Tōpuni areas (sacred), water protection

The conference will focus on practical solutions in terms of adapting to a changing mountain environment, responding to changing visitor patterns and behaviour and preserving mountains for the enjoyment of future generations in relation to core conference themes.

The Sustainable Summits Conference welcomes an exciting group of speakers, at one of the most inspiring views in the world and initial interest shows that there is a wide range of topics participants want to air and debate. They have travelled from across New Zealand and around the world to share their unique viewpoints.

In the lead up to the Sustainable Summits conference at Aoraki Mount Cook in August this year, they will present a few articles on the effects of climate change on mountain environments.

The conference organisers and NZAC participants are excited about hosting the conference and they are adding to the existing global experiences and knowledge by reading all that can be done on mountain sustainability.

Co-coordinators of the Sustainable Summits Conference, Dave Bamford and John Cocks, are positive that this conference will a stimulating forum to discuss the challenges of using and managing special mountain areas in New Zealand and around the world, and to share solutions.

Dave Bamford comments:

With over 60 registered and 100 expected for the Sustainable Summits Conference, organisers and participants are assured of an active, lively three days at Aoraki Mount Cook.

Understanding roles and responsibilities of international and national organisations such as  FAO, WWF, Mountain Forum,  IUCN -WCPA Mountain Biome Network, UNESCO, The Mountain Partnership, the various alpine and mountain clubs the International Mountain Biking Association etc, is important.
