Small Research Grants on Education Program
This program is field-initiated, allowing proposals to be on any research topic, discipline, design, method, or location. Instead, its goal is to support research that addresses the most pressing questions and opportunities in education.
Projects can span various settings where learning occurs, including classrooms, workplaces, families, and communities, and can cover topics across multiple disciplines such as education, anthropology, psychology, sociology, economics, history, and neuroscience. The program highly values methodological diversity, and projects should employ quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods in their research.
The program provides up to $50,000 for research projects, with an additional option to request up to $10,000. Projects may last up to five years and must comply with the budget and indirect cost restrictions set by the Spencer Foundation

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a Small Research Grants on Education Program, you must write proposals in English and propose budgets in U.S. Dollars, as well as:
- Aim to study education, excluding other areas or activities like program evaluations, professional development, or curriculum development.
- Be led by Principal Investigators (PIs) or Co-PIs with an earned doctorate or equivalent professional experience in education research.
- Be affiliated with a non-profit organization or public/governmental institution that can administer the grant if awarded.
Graduate students can be part of the research team but cannot serve as PI or Co-PI.
Application Process
Before applying, make sure you have the following details ready for the application:
- Proposal Summary: Include project title, dates, research questions, and a 200-word project summary.
- Budget and Budget Justification, which includes: salaries, benefits, travel expenses, equipment and software, and any other expenses your project might have.
- Proposal Narrative: Describe the project, its significance, literature review, conceptual framework, methods, participants, data collection instruments, and analysis. This narrative is limited to 1800 words.
- Project Timeline: Indicate key project events and milestones.
- Project Team: Outline the roles and contributions of each team member.
