Wanted: Bright minds who can reinvent fashion and change the way it is seen, worn and made. The aim is to find game-changing innovations that can help turn the fashion industry into a planet positive one. Do you have one?
H&M Global Change Award is looking for game-changing solutions that address one or several of the global commons to create a planet positive fashion future. The global commons are: land, water, oceans, climate and biodiversity
Who should participate?
The Global Change Award wants to find and support game-changing innovations that can break the linear traditions of fashion. You are encouraged to submit innovations aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals which address the five global commons: biodiversity, climate, land, ocean and water.
Every year innovators and entrepreneurs from all over the world are invited to submit their early stage ideas on how to improve the sustainable footprint of the fashion industry.
The six most promising innovations share a grant of 1 million euros and participate in a one-year tailor-made Innovation Accelerator Program, provided by the H&M Foundation in partnership with Accenture and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
Protecting the global commons
All life on Earth depends on clean air and water, biodiversity, healthy forests, fields, oceans and a stable climate. These resources – called the global commons – regulates the stability and resilience on our planet.
- Biodiversity: Cotton accounts for 2.4% of global cropland, but stands for 22.5% of the insecticide use.
- Climate: The textile industry accounts for up to 10% of global carbon emissions.
- Land: Apparel supply chains are directly linked to soil degradation and habitat loss
- Water: Apparel production is the second-largest user of the world’s freshwater supply.
- Ocean: 35% of all microplastics in the ocean comes from the laundering of synthetic textiles.
