What is the EIC Pathfinder?
The EIC Pathfinder is a key component of the Horizon Europe programme offering funding and support at the earliest stages of technological research (TRL 1-4). It does so in the hopes of turning high-risk ideas into viable concepts with the potential to reshape industries. The program offers:
- Funds for the scientific groundwork necessary to create breakthrough innovations.
- Support in the early-stage research and development for pioneering deep-tech solutions.
- Fostering disruptive technologies that could create entirely new markets or significantly alter existing ones.

EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2024
For the 2024 cycle, the Challenges focus on five exciting thematic areas, with a total budget of €120 million, and up to 4 million per project. The challenges encourage groundbreaking research with a high potential for technological disruption.
Solar-to-X Devices
This challenge focuses on synthetic fuel and chemical technologies powered solely by solar energy. It aims to integrate all conversion steps into a single device, driving the vision of localized, self-sufficient energy systems.
Towards Cement and Concrete as a Carbon Sink
Research under this challenge seeks to develop decarbonized and carbon-negative technologies for cement and concrete, reducing the environmental impact of these crucial building materials.
Nature-Inspired Alternatives for Food Packaging and Agricultural Films
This challenge calls for sustainable, nature-inspired solutions to replace fossil-carbon-based plastics in food packaging and agricultural production. The goal is to support the EU’s transition toward a circular economy.
Nanoelectronics for Energy-Efficient Smart Edge Devices
This challenge focuses on solutions that drastically reduce the power consumption of smart edge devices, especially for edge processing, sensing, imaging, and communication. Projects should start at TRL 1-2 and aim to reach TRL 3-4.
Strengthening the Sustainability and Resilience of EU Space Infrastructure
This challenge targets innovations that mitigate space debris and enhance the in-space recycling of defunct satellites. It aims to safeguard space infrastructure from escalating debris risks.
