Eligibility: independent journalists and social scientists worldwide

Would you like to join a ground-breaking project that bridges the gap between journalism and research? A project that is fostering new perspectives and collaborative approaches to understanding the world?

If you are a journalist or a researcher with a passion for exploring critical perspectives on political economy, ecology, migration, and culture, this is the one for you.

Bridging Narratives Grant

The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam funds this project to foster collaboration between independent journalists and social scientists, including researchers, scholars, and early-career academics.

Participants will co-create stories on critical topics, with primary dissemination through The Contrapuntal. The final publications may take various forms, including text, audio-visual, or illustrations.

Eligibility & Financial Support

This project invites journalists and researchers at any career stage to apply, especially for stories on migration, ecology, political economy, and culture.

It provides €400 per story, shared between the journalist and researcher, mainly to cover fieldwork expenses like logistics, travel, and insurance. This initiative will fund a total of eight stories.

How to apply

Both individual and joint applications are eligible for this project. Each application should be sent to thecontrapuntal@protonmail.com with the subject line “Bridging Narratives Grant”. Moreover, it needs to include:

  • A one-page CV
  • Up to 300 words pitch outlining the proposed story or research. (You may submit up to two pitches, however, only one will be selected for development.

Individual Applications

Journalists and researchers (including PhDs, MAs, and independent scholars) may apply individually. Applicants then will be paired with a professional from the other discipline, allowing them to co-develop their pitch into a final project.

Joint Applications

Teams of journalists and researchers who already have a collaborative project in mind should apply together.
