The 9-month Fellowship is divided into two phases, offering a combination of research, training, and academic study tailored to the Fellows’ chosen fields.

Phase One: This phase spans three months, typically from March/April to June. It takes place at the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It focuses on intensive research and training.

Phase Two:
This six-month phase runs from July to December at one of the prestigious Host Institutions. During this period, Fellows undertake advanced academic research and study under the supervision of experts in their chosen field.

Fellowship Benefits

Monthly Stipend: a monthly stipend to cover the cost of lodging, board, and other essentials during their time abroad.
Book Allowance: a book allowance of $100 per month during phase two, amounting to $600 in total.
Insurance: Cigna Health Insurance, covers general medical and hospital treatments up to a specified limit. Specialized services are not included, and Fellows must pay for medical services upfront and seek reimbursement later.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Fellowship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 25 and 40 years of age;
  • Have completed a first university degree;
  • Demonstrate the capacity for independent advanced academic research and study;
  • Hold a professional role in a national government or non-governmental agency of a developing State that deals with ocean affairs;
  • Your research proposal must directly support the nation’s ocean affairs policies and programs;
  • Be available for the entire Fellowship period without non-Fellowship obligations, unless otherwise authorized.
